I was recently asked by someone what is my favourite restaurant in Montreal. Even though it might seem an easy question for most of us, I found myself incapable of answering that very simple question. Why? Probably because there are so many good restaurants in the city. After all, Montreal has the highest number of restaurants per Capita in Canada and the second in North America, after New York. However, I found the best ramen in Montreal and I thought it might be interest for every foodie out there.

Even if I try a lot of restaurants, only a few can retain my attention — and eventually become a go-to.

One of my favourite restaurants is Yokato Yokabai

Yokato Yokabai — which is known to serve the best ramen in Montreal — is definitely amongst this short list of restaurants where I like to go back again and again. While this is probably one of the simplest menu of the whole island — 2 ramen soups and a few sides — this is also without a doubt the one I love the most.

Soups, in general, are known to be very comforting and I think, us Quebecers, love to eat comfort food — just think about how popular the poutine is. Japanese food has increasingly become popular in the past few years — thanks to the sushis, am I right?. Ramen soup is also a very popular traditional Japanese dish, that comes in different shapes and sizes. There is something very special about the one they serve at Yokato Yokabai.

The pork bones based broth — called tonkotsu — is so thick and luscious you can’t even see the noodles hidden at the bottom of the bowl. Add a side of karaage — Japanese fried chicken — and you’re all set for the most comfortable meal for a cold winter day.

I like to order my soup with the tonkotsu broth, pork, more salt, more green onion, nori and half an egg.

How to get to Yokato Yokabai?

Yokato Yokabai is very central and can be accessed by the STM Orange Line — you can whether stop at Mont-Royal or Sherbrooke it’s almost the same walking distance from both. However, I would recommend stopping at Mont-Royal Station and go down on St-Denis to discover Geekatorium — a small boutique with all sorts of geek stuff including everything Japanese.
