Montreal Coffee Crawl: Discovering the Best Cups in Town — January 2023

Welcome to the first edition of our monthly Montreal coffee crawl, where we set out to discover the best cups of coffee in the city. Each month, we will be visiting three different coffee shops in Montreal, trying their signature drinks and eats (if available), and sharing our thoughts with you. For our January 2023 edition, we are kicking off the year with a bang by visiting three spots we never been to: Sandwich Mi Bao, café léo and OSMO X MARUSAN Café-Terrasse. Whether you’re a coffee lover or just looking for a new spot to try, we hope our journey will inspire you to explore the city’s coffee scene. So, grab your favorite mug and join us as we discover the best cups in town.

First stop: Sandwich Mi Bao

Sandwich Mi Bao is a brand new sandwich shop located near Quartier des Spectacles, right in front of the CHUM Hospital. Mi Bao is a new project by the owners of a place we love in our neighbourhood: TT Café. While there’s a few seats available, Mi Bao is mostly for takeouts. We tested their Breakfast Banh Mi — which was good but missed a little oomph, compared to their regular banh mi — and we got a Viet café and a double espresso to go.

Second stop: café léo — Montreal Coffee Crawl

café léo is a coffee shop located right in front of UQAM main campus downtown Montreal. Their spacious and luminous location offers a great selection of handmade beverages as well as a very nice coworking space. Their double espresso really hit the spot for me and it was a perfect match with their Breakfast Croissant. I liked it so much that I went back two days later for a coworking session with a friend.

Third stop: OSMO X MARUSAN

OSMO X MARUSAN is a coffee shop that also has a food menu, specifically Japanese cuisine. While the place is quite popular and becomes crowded fast, it was quite easy to get a table for two when we went. Their beverage selection is very innovative and in addition to tasting good, it looks good! We had the karaage sando along with a curry and it was just so good and comforting on this cold winter day. We will definitely go back.
